"When nothing goes right, go left."

Well, it has to happen someday, and now it has.

The Yes Company, which describes itself as “a remote team with designers, production, and engineers all over the world, including the US and Shenzhen”, are crowdfunding an improved version of the ordinary cutting, or chopping, board.

Yup, that one we all use in the kitchen.

The fundraising effort on Kickstarter for the ChopBox Cutting Board, the official name of the invention, has now far exceeded the target.

More than 10,000 backers of the project/product have pledged close to USD1.5 million to the team. It is an incredible achievement when you consider that the original target was only USD10,000!

And it reached its original target in a mere 25 minutes after the campaign went “live” on Kickstarter.

Obviously quite a few people are quite excited about the invention.

So, what’s the smart ChopBox Cutting Board?

Simply put, it is a juiced up version of the traditional board, with 10 main features. They are:

  1. The board is made from organic bamboo
  2. A dual board design, meaning there are 2 boards actually
  3. 2 knife sharperners built into the board
  4. A digital timer
  5. An utraviolet light source (for sanitizing and disinfecting knives and the boards)
  6. A battery which has a 30-day capacity
  7. A specially designed groove “for catching juices”
  8. It is waterproof (s o yes, you can wash it)
  9. A weighing scale
  10. It is quick charging

“Instead of needing up to five single-use gadgets and tools in your kitchen the ChopBox combines all five into one amazing cutting board,” the company says on Kickstarter.

One of the more interesting inclusions with the board is the UVC light source for sanitising and disinfecting bacteria on knives and the boards.

“Now you can place your knife in between the two cutting surfaces and activate the small but powerful 254nm UVC light to sanitize up to 3 knives at once AND both cutting surfaces at the same time!” the company says. “Just one minute of UVC light exposure is guaranteed to kill 99.99% of germs and bacteria.”

The board weighs about 2.7kg, and has dimensions of 17.9” x 11” x 1.2”.

“We wanted to design a smart, creative, useful product to make cooking a delicious homecooked meal easier and more efficient, all while saving you time, money, and hassle,” the team says. “The key thing for us in the design process was to make something that was useful and had all the features you need while including the electronic components to give you the efficiency and smart capabilities.”

As of 25 September, there are 23 days left to the end of the fundraising campaign.
